Week 2

Last night was full on and the time flew. We made a video around displaying what "collaboration" might look like in the classroom. Our group chose to work within the social sciences and make it relevant to what we are actually working on with our students.

We worked well as a team (interdependent) and each person used their skills to put together the video. I had spent some time looking through Imovie in preparation for the activity as I had not used it for quite a few years and the programme looks very different now.

It was a learning curve on the night due to the time pressure but I learned a lot about putting videos together. We also learned a way of uploading to the community without going through Youtube, which was very handy (thanks Tom).

I am now thinking about which part of my practice I want to look at for the assignment. At the moment I am leaning towards improving collaboration because my children don't always work interdependently within their groups. This is due to some children dominating and some children just opting out.

Day 1 of Mind Lab Course

I am feeling more confident about my decision to take on extra study. The other teachers I met were really friendly and were feeling a lot like me! Herbert has a relaxed manner, which put us at ease.

Our collaborative activity of creating images out of play dough to represent our understanding of what knowledge is and and the purpose of education was interesting and challenging. We panicked a little when it came to the video and upload (and we ran out of time). This had the desired effect though as I am now going to take an iPad and camera from now on, as well as brush up on the use of iMovie.

Our view of what knowledge is was "... a justified true belief". Although I'm not totally convinced this is the best description.

As for the purpose of education, we came up with: "To create children who will participate and contribute successfully in the adult world".
